Two young Canadian swimmers performed well enough Monday to advance in the women's 200-metre freestyle competition at the Rio Olympic Games.

Katerine Savard, of Pont-Rouge, Que., and Brittany MacLean, who was born in Mississauga, Ont., will now compete in the semifinals against 14 other high-performance athletes after finishing 10th and 16th, respectively.

Only the top 16 competitors move on and stay in the hunt for a medal at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

Savard, 23, raced in the third heat and came second with a time of 1:57:15, just behind Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong.

"I'm really happy about that," Savard told CBC Sports after the heat.

MacLean, 22, posted a final time of 1:56.94 competing in the sixth and final heat.

The two semifinal races are scheduled to begin Monday at 10:03 p.m. ET, which you can watch live on CBCSports.ca.
