Rosie MacLennan soars to national trampoline title

Rosie MacLennan won the Canadian individual women's trampoline title Friday, but the gold is just another among many for the 27-year-old en route to defending her Olympic gold in Rio this summer.

The competition was held during the 2016 Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Edmonton.

The King City, Ont., trampolinist finished the competition Friday with a total score of 157.295, well clear of silver-medallist Samatha Smith's 150.310. Samantha Sendel finished bronze with a total score of 150.245.

MacLennan is the reigning Olympic champion and was the only Canadian to strike gold at the 2012 London Games. She will again compete for Canada at the upcoming Games in Rio de Janeiro. She also won gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto and was the 2013 world champion in individual competition.

Jason Burnett, the 2008 Olympic silver medallist, won the men's competition with a total score of 161.375 while upcoming star Trevor Stirling finished second with 157.425. Keegan Soehn was third.

Onyhsko shades Black

With Olympic selection the line for the senior women's artistic gymnastics athletes, Isabela Onyhsko of Brandon, Man., and Ellie Black of Halifax were battling for the all-around title throughout the night, until an error on the uneven bars by Black left an opening for Onyshko to claim the title (58.550).

Black finished second (56.650), followed by Rose-Kaying Woo of Brossard, Que., in third (55.375).

"We came into nationals really focusing on my routines and the D and E scores, which are what are going to give me the points to make the Olympic team, so winning is just icing on the cake – nice icing!" Onyhsko said.

The Canadian Gymnastics Championships continue Saturday.
