The Canadian duo improved with each dive, starting off their round with a score off 43.80 before finishing with a pair of 72s. Their total score of 301.20 was just good enough to steal silver.
"We're really excited," said McKay. "We haven't trained that much together. We just put everything together around three weeks ago."
McKay, from Calgary, and Riendeau, of Montreal, struggled with the compulsory section, sitting in eighth place after two of five dives. But the Canadians moved into third place before edging the Russia pair with their final dive.
"Caeli is an extremely powerful diver," said Riendeau. "She is one of the women who jumps the highest. So for me, doing synchro with her makes the task a little easier to time because she's able to match my height in the dives."
China's Yajie Si, Junjie Lian won gold with a commanding 353.31-point performance, while Russia's Valeriia Belova and Sergey Nazin snuck in for bronze with 299.88 points.
