Marco Arop wins 1,000-metre race at Zagreb World Athletics Continental Tour meet

Marco Arop of Edmonton won the men's 1,000-metre race at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Zagreb, Croatia on Sunday. The 25-year-old posted a world-leading time of two minutes 13.13 seconds to set Canadian and meet records.

Marco Arop of Edmonton won the men's 1,000-metre race at the World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Zagreb, Croatia on Sunday.

The 25-year-old posted a time of two minutes 13.13 seconds to set Canadian and meet records in the non-Olympic distance. Arop beat his previous mark of 2:14.35 from the Monaco Diamond League meet in August 2022.

Kenyan-born Jonah Koech, who represents the United States, finished 2.02 seconds behind Arop. Stefan Nillessen of the Netherlands was third.

Arop earned his first Olympic medal in Paris last month with silver in the men's 800m event. He won the world championship in the distance in Budapest 2023, improving on his bronze from the previous year in Eugene, Ore.

In other Canadian results, reigning Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg of Nanaimo, B.C., was third in the men's hammer throw event with a best attempt of 79.04 metres.

Mykhaylo Kokhan of Ukraine, who won bronze in Paris, finished first with a throw of 81.14 to edge Poland's Paweł Fajdek (79.10).

Jerome Blake of Kelowna, B.C. was fourth in the men's 100m race with a time of 10.15 seconds.

American Courtney Lindsey secured victory in 9.97 seconds ahead of Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya (10.02) and Romell Glave of the U.K. (10.11).

Blake was part of the Canadian 4×100m relay team that struck gold in Paris 2024 and earned silver in Tokyo 2021.
