Toronto's Cynthia Appiah captured her first World Cup monobob medal of the season in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Appiah claimed her 10th career World Cup monobob podium finish.

"The season has not gone the way I would have liked, so to finally crack the podium on what I consider my home track has been exhilarating," said Appiah. "I can't overstate the importance of this podium finish.

"World championships will be here next year and today was a great trial run for what fans and athletes can expect to see."

Appiah placed third in the season-long monobob standings last year, reaching five podiums across eight starts.

Last off-season, though, she returned to athletics after a 10-year absence, eventually placing third at Canadian nationals in shot put with a throw of 14.84 metres.

Action from Lake Placid continues Friday with the two-man bobsleigh heats slated for 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ET on CBCSports.ca, the CBC Sports app and CBC Gem.
