Reynolds fills in for Chipeur at worlds

Edmonton figure skater Vaughn Chipeur will not compete at the world championships later this month because of a torn ligament in his right foot, the Canadian team announced on Thursday.

Kevin Reynolds, 19, will replace the two-time Canadian silver medallist Chipeur at the event in Turin, Italy, Skate Canada said.

Chipeur finished 23rd in his first Olympic experience last month, but that didn't dampen his enthusiasm.

"My Olympic experience has really re-energized my love of skating and competing," the 25-year-old Chipeur said in a statement. "I’m interested in continuing to skate and to progress in the sport and look forward to coming back next season even stronger."

Coquitlam, B.C., native Reynolds vaulted from fifth to third after a strong free skate at the Canadian championships in London, Ont., in January, landing a quad.

Patrick Chan will look to reach the podium at the world championships for a second straight time after winning silver in Los Angeles last year.

Defending champion and Vancouver Olympics gold medallist Evan Lysacek has opted not to compete at the Torino event, which takes place March 22-28.
