Canada opened the tournament with a 38-14 win over Fiji, but lost its next two matches — 21-19 to England and 19-5 to Russia — and failed to qualify for the Cup quarter-finals for the first time in Series history.
Canada then fell 24-19 to Ireland in the Challenge Trophy consolation bracket semifinals. The match needed extra time after a late try and conversion from Ireland knotted things up at 19.
The Canadians concluded their tournament with a 33-14 win over Japan to place 11th. The result dropped Canada to fifth in the overall World Series standings with two tournaments remaining, including hosting in Langford, B.C. on May 12-13.
New Zealand, which recently won gold at the Commonwealth Games, successfully defended its title with a 24-12 win over France. The Black Ferns defeated Canada in the inaugural final last year.
The Canadian team was dealt a blow Friday when captain Ghislaine Landry was ruled out because of an injury sustained at the Gold Coast Games earlier this month.
