Oft-injured Andreescu hurts lower leg in 4th round of Miami Open

2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., left the court in a wheelchair on Monday due to a lower left leg injury in the second set of her fourth round match against 18th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Miami Open.

There was no immediate word on the nature of the 22-year-old's injury or its severity.

Andreescu was trailing in the match when, moving across the baseline, she fell to the court, clutching her lower left leg and screaming. A short time later, she left the court in a wheelchair to a standing ovation.

Andreescu had dropped the first set 7-6 (7) and was mounting a comeback, winning the first two games of the second set when she was forced to retire, allowing Alexandrova to advance.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., is forced to retire from her fourth round match at the Miami Open against Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia after taking a fall and suffering an ankle injury.

"I'm just really sorry that it happened to [Andreescu]," Alexandrova said after the match. "Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it's just painful to watch.

"You cannot help, you just can do nothing, which is terrible. And I think she's going to be fine soon, and I'm wishing for her speedy recovery."

Andreescu's agent, Charlotte Lawler, said via email Andreescu met with her doctor Tuesday afternoon. Lawler said a statement would be released once injury specifics were available.

Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime was eliminated from the men's tournament earlier in the day after being upset 6-2, 7-5 in a third-round match with Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo.

Cerundolo, ranked 25th in Miami, scored a crucial break over fifth-seed Auger-Aliassime to go up 6-5 in the second set before serving out for the match.

The Argentine made the most of his opportunities, breaking Auger-Aliassime four times on six chances. He faced only two break points, saving one.

Auger-Aliassime saw his streak of six straight quarterfinals at Masters 1000 events come to an end.

It was the third high-profile third-round meeting between the players, with Auger-Aliassime winning at Indian Wells and the Australian Open.

Number 25 seed Francisco Cerúndolo upset number five seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal 6-2, 7-5 in the third round of the Miami Open.

In women's doubles action, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and American partner Taylor Townsend advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over seventh seeds Giuliana Olmos of Mexico and Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.

Fernandez and Townsend combined to fire six aces and win 64 per cent of first serve points in a match that took one hour 33 minutes to complete.

Olmos and Haddad Maia scored three of their four breaks and defended 10 of 13 break-point chances in a back-and-forth second set that ended with Haddad Maia hitting long facing match point.

Fernandez and Townsend will face third seeds Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine on Tuesday.
