UFC star St-Pierre says knee surgery a success

Georges St-Pierre says his knee surgery was a success and he has started physiotherapy. 

The UFC welterweight champion tweeted: "Dr. ElAttrache says my surgery (ACL patellar tendon autograft) was huge success! Ligament very strong. Tks for support!" 

The surgery was done Tuesday in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic. ElAttrache is head physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and is an orthopedic consultant with the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Lakers and Kings, St. Louis Rams and PGA Tour. 

St-Pierre also tweeted a picture of him, in a recovery room, shaking hands with his doctor. 

He then tweeted a photo of him sitting down, next to a pair of crutches. 

"Physio starts today, first step on my road to recovery. Going to do exactly what the experts tell me to do!" he tweeted Wednesday. 

The 30-year-old mixed martial arts star from Montreal suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a small tear to his internal meniscus during a wrestling training session. 

He is expected to be out for some 10 months. Nick Diaz, who was slated to fight St-Pierre on Super Bowl weekend, will instead face Carlos Condit for the interim 170-pound title.
