FILMS
This horror film surprised audiences with its unsettling atmosphere and disturbing imagery. It captured the authenticity of 1600s New England while injecting the macabre into our psyche.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
This cerebral fantasy film from Terry Gilliam probably gained notoriety for being Heath Ledger's final film when the actor passed away while the film was still in production. Given the surrealness of the film's premise, Ledger's character allowed for recasting while still being able to use his footage. Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to complete filming.
It's very rare you'd find a romantic comedy starring Harry Potter and Kylo Ren yet here it is on CBC Gem! This runaway hit from Michael Dowse wowed crowds at TIFF and received international acclaim abroad, though the name was changed to What If in the US market due to the implications the original title posed... friends.
Need more Michael Dowse? Journey back to 2002 with this mockumentary about two headbanger friends in Alberta that has since built up a cult following.
Academy Award nominee for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress has found a home on CBC Gem. This romantic period drama was a co-production between Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
And I suppose it's not too surprising to find a few films from the David Cronenberg library but given the commercial success of these films on the international stage, it's a pleasure to find them in our own backyard.
TELEVISION

Top of the Lake and Top of the Lake: China Girl
Top of the Lake and Top of the Lake: China Girl from Jane Campion is a compelling binge if you're into some heavy crime mystery dramas. Starring Elisabeth Moss as Detective Robin Griffin.
