Time-travel series Plan B is back for Season 3 with a fresh story and new cast

Plan B, a twisty, Canadian time travel series adapted from the French-language Quebec series of the same name, is back with Season 3 on August 8. Each season features a new character who travels back in time to relive events leading up to a pivotal moment in their life.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Plan B is the way it pulls the rug from under the notion that, if we could only go back and change things, everything would be great. "When you make a different choice or a different action, it always has other consequences," says series co-creator Jean-François Asselin. "It's not true that there's a magic way of doing everything. You can control yourself, your own behaviour, but you can't control life at all."

What is Plan B, Season 3 about?

Celebrity morning TV host and women's rights activist Abigail Walker's (Carolina Bartczak) world is shattered when her 15-year-old daughter Lucy (Arianna Shannon) takes her own life. Grieving, she's plagued by her parenting decisions. Did she give her daughter too much freedom? Should she have intervened in Lucy's relationship with her abusive 20-something boyfriend, Alex? Did her breakup with Lucy's father (Arnold Pinnock) contribute to her depression?

When Abigail stumbles upon the mysterious time travel agency Plan B, she goes back in time to prevent tragedy. But will she lose herself in her quest to save her daughter?

"I think the premise is scary, but it really is a story that is filled with hope and love," says co-director Marianne Farley. "It's also a really beautiful story about struggling parents and struggling teenagers."

Canadian actress Carolina Bartczak (Painkiller, Beacon 23, Moonfall) plays the lead role of Abigail Walker. "Everything does go through Abigail's perspective, which is interesting because you watch the world shift every time she makes a decision. You get to see everything through her eyes," says Bartczak.

Particularly chilling is the moment when Abigail comes home to discover her daughter's body. To make the scene realistic, the series director shot it in real time, lasting seven minutes.

Plan B, Scene Spotlight

Carolina Bartczak talks about a challenging scene and how it was filmed for Season 3 of Plan B.

Abigail is dispassionate and strangely calm, a trait often observed in individuals who have experienced emotional trauma. "I think movies and television have taught us that when something tragic happens, a person's reaction is to scream and cry and suffer through it right away," says Bartczak, "whereas that's not necessarily how human beings work. When one part of our brain can't handle a tragedy, it can twist itself into knots, preventing you from seeing what's right in front of you."

Arianna Shannon plays Lucy Walker on Plan B, Season 3 (Yan Turcotte)

Arianna Shannon

Arianna Shannon, in her first professional acting role, plays teenage daughter Lucy Walker. It's an emotionally bruising role, says Shannon. "She's facing some tough challenges, as many girls her age face, just growing up and being a teenager. But she's also facing a lot of extreme emotions and mental health issues."

Arnold Pinnock plays Nick Daniels on Plan B. (Danny Taillon)

Arnold Pinnock
Veteran actor Arnold Pinnock (Exit Wounds, Down to Earth, Billable Hours) plays Lucy's dad and Abigail's ex Nick Daniels. Still in love with Abigail, Nick lives in the house next door with his new partner and is devastated by his daughter's death. "As a loving father, the minute you walk into that room, it's almost like a scary movie," says Pinnock, "it's at the end of the hall and you're walking towards it. And then it hits you like a two-by-four to the face."

Actor Jaeden Noel (Orphan Black: Echoes, Beacon 23, DOIN' IT) plays Lucy's brother Felix Daniels. Steady and talented, Felix is often overlooked by both of his parents, who concentrate on Lucy's issues.

Ennis Esmer (Children Ruin Everything, The Madness), Carolyn Taylor (Baroness von Sketch Show), and Grace Lynn Kung (Sort Of, Miss Sloane) round out the cast as Abigail's coworkers at The Daily Dawn. Esmer plays Manny, the show's new director and a sweet-natured guy who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Abigail. "When you consider how heavy a lot of the material is," says Esmer, "it's kind of nice that a bittersweet romcom is happening between our characters. It's something different for her, an indulgence for her, something she wouldn't usually allow herself."
