'You are always an immigrant when you're on stolen land': A poet reminds us of our history
Award-winning poet Lishai has some strong words for anti-immigration advocates
"Don't forget the flame that forged you." Those are the words of Lishai, an award-winning poet, creative consultant and community animator — and the latest contributor to CBC Arts' video series Poetic License.
In the above video, Lishai — who develops and facilitates arts-based programming in schools throughout Toronto and is the co-founder of Ink Veins: Young Women's Writing Collective — takes on anti-immigration policies and those who support them.
"Some Republicans may debate the rights of those not born in their country as though they themselves are not newcomers," she says. "But you are always an immigrant when you're on stolen land."
It's a powerful thought to consider in these alarming times.
