Gloria Mehlmann recommends Treaty Promises, Indian Reality by Harold LeRat and Linda Ungar
June was Indigenous Book Club Month. Every day in June, CBC Books published a recommendation from an Indigenous writer for a book by another Indigenous author.
Gloria Mehlmann recommends Treaty Promises, Indian Reality: Life on a Reserve by Harold LeRat, with Linda Ungar.
"Stephen Hawking once likened an alien invasion of Earth to the time Europeans arrived and how Native Americans were treated. Harold LeRat's Treaty Promises, Indian Reality: Life on a Reserve, published in 2005, outlines the alien method in stunning detail. Policies of convenience are seen as systematically disconnecting people, home and identity. Collaborating with writer-columnist Linda Ungar, LeRat relies on solid memory and government papers to give a gripping account of the making of Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan. More than a local history, this book is important for all readers and for writers, like me, working on stories of 'home.'"
Gloria Mehlmann received the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2005 for her contributions to educational, Indigenous and civic initiatives. Formerly a public school teacher, Mehlmann published the memoir Gifted to Learn about her experiences in the education system in 2008.
