Robyn Maynard loved Leanne Betasamosake Simpson's As We Have Always Done in 2017
Happy holidays! CBC Books asked authors to share their favourite Canadian books of 2017. We will be publishing these recommendations throughout December.
Robyn Maynard chose As We Have Always Done by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson.
"As We Have Always Done is one of the best books of 2017, but also among the best I've read in a decade. Her critique of settler colonialism in Canada — and her exploration of freedom through radical resistance — is a gift to all of us committed to building ethical futures on Turtle Island."
Robyn Maynard is an activist, feminist writer and author based in Montreal. Her 2017 book Policing Black Lives takes a look at the underreported history of racial injustice in Canada — including the country's involvement with slavery and the criminalization of Indigenous and Black Canadians — and why all Canadians need to look at dismantling structures of racial domination and re-imagine a more just society.
