Happy holidays! CBC Books asked authors to share their favourite books of 2017. We will be publishing these recommendations throughout December.

Terry Watada selected Powell Street Diary by Jesse Nishihata.

"My favourite book to come out in 2017 was Powell Street Diary: A Remembrance of Life before Internment by Jesse Nishihata. Jesse's diary reveals Japanese Canadian life in Vancouver just before the Second World War. Jesse was a friend and mentor to me. He suffered from Alzheimer's and died in 2006. I am comforted by the fact that some of his memories are preserved in this book."
