Five bold NYFW spring 2018 beauty trends to try right now
Beauty is taking a step back, and we couldn’t be happier
The makeup tides are changing, if the looks we saw on the runways at New York Fashion are to be believed. Out with lipstick. Out with blush. And out with bright hues on the eyelids. While there were a smattering of red and orange lips, as well as hits of teal and purple on the eyes at a limited number of the shows, the main attraction was pared back glamour. This means the focus is back on skincare, with well-placed makeup as a way to highlight one's individuality.
From barely-there pouts to standout hair accessories to bronzed cheeks, these are the beauty look that took centre stage at NYFW.
The Trend: Bare lips
The Shows: Coach 1941, Zadig & Voltaire, Gabriela Hearst, Carolina Herrera, Marchesa, Diane von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung, Sies Marjan, Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang, Public School, Ralph Lauren
The Details: It was quite a shock to see bare lips after so many seasons of makeup artists playing with colour. But so far, this is one major trend to keep an eye on. Lips looked they were either freshly scrubbed and had a good slather of hydrating lip balm applied or there was a tiny hint of pink only to bring up the natural colour in the model's pout. No matter your preference, the message was loud and clear: Put down your lipstick, ladies!
The Trend: Hair accouterments
The Shows: Delpozo, Mansur Gavriel, Marc Jacobs, Philip Plein
The Details: Bringing a '70s sophistication to the runway, both Marc Jacobs and Delpozo put the beauty focus on head gear, namely giant wicker head bows and headscarves respectively. At Mansur Gavriel, models wore low-slung ponytails tied back with scrunchies (yes, scrunchies!). And at Philip Plein, the braided hair extensions were peppered with black flowers.
The Trend: Black-lined eyes
The Shows: Marc Jacobs, Coach 1941, Carolina Herrera, Monse, Tom Ford
The Details: Complementing freshly made up skin (those makeup artists really went through a ton of concealer this season!) were black-rimmed eyes. At Marc Jacobs, a graphic thick black line came to a point on the outer and inner corners of the eye. Other designers also went big, like at Tom Ford, where the look was blinged out with a hit of glitter. And at Monse, where Canadian talent Grace Lee placed a thin line just centimetres above the usual cat eye flick, the look was modern and clean.
The Trend: Middle parted, rough but brushed out hair
The Shows: Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Derek Lam, Marchesa, Tanya Taylor, Alexander Wang, Badgley Mishka, Calvin Klein
The Details: While model-off-duty, beachy hair is still a street style and runway staple, clean, brushed locks, now parted down the middle, is where designers and their hair teams are spending their time. At Tanya Taylor, stylist Justine Marjan even went a bit further by roughing up the low slung ponytails at the roots. And at Calvin Klein, Kaia Gerber reminded everyone of her uber attractive lineage with flowy, yet tame tresses, reminiscent of her mom Cindy Crawford's famously thick mane.
The Trend: Bronzed cheeks
The Shows: Michael Kors, Anna Sui, Zero + Maria Cornejo, Oscar de la Renta, 3.1 Philip Lim, Derek Lam, Zimmerman
The Details: The king of the sunkissed glow, Michael Kors continued his reign by sending his muses down the catwalk with bronzer placed high on the cheeks, and not much else. The same look followed suit at a handful of shows, either as part of a bare faced look, or paired with orangy-brown lips at Oscar de la Renta or a watermelon pout at Derek Lam. One thing is for certain, bronzer is back!
