Spring means prom season is in full swing and if you've found the perfect dress or the perfect suit, you'll of course need the accessories to go with it. And when you think prom accessories, you think corsages and boutonnieres, right? We promise they're still a thing, and they're prettier than ever. In fact, they're also super fun to make and DIY-ing them means you can customize your colour scheme to match your ensemble. If you're a little uncertain, fear not, because our DIYer extraordinaire, Steven Sabados, shared all the secrets to crafting your own classics.

To make your corsages and boutonnieres last well into the night, be sure to make them from sturdy flowers. For all of these DIY's, you can use faux leaves and blooms along with a selection of fresh sturdy blooms such as roses, orchids, and ranunculus, and a variety of accent greenery and tiny florals, such as misty blue, freesia, seeded eucalyptus, baby's breath, spray roses, dusty miller, or whatever catches your eye!

Costume jewelry corsage

Here's what you'll need:

  • Sturdy blooms (such as orchids or roses) cut to the base
  • An assortment of greenery
  • Inexpensive bracelets that clamp firmly onto the wrist
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • 1 artificial leaf
  • Tacky glue or floral wire (hot glue could be used if you're in a pinch, but tacky glue is great for fresh florals)

Here's how to do it:

1. Use hot glue to attach an artificial leaf to the bracelet to form the base.

2. Attach flowers to the base using tacky glue or floral wire. A combo of roses and orchids surrounded by some accent greenery such as eucalyptus and misty blue is a classic, but stunning combo.

Ring corsage

Here's what you'll need:

  • Inexpensive ring, with a broad base
  • Sturdy flat-bottomed flowers cut to the base (orchids work great for this!)
  • Artificial leaf
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Tacky glue or floral wire (hot glue could be used if you're in a pinch)

Here's how to do it:

1. Opt for a flat, wide ring. Avoid thin bands as they will be too small for anything to stick to.

2. Hot glue the artificial leaf to your ring. This will function as a base for your corsage.

3. Attach flat-bottomed florals to the leaf using tacky glue or floral wire. Opt for only a couple of blooms here, since this corsage is a little more delicate than one for the wrist.

Simple boutonniere

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 faux bloom
  • Sturdy, real blooms and greenery (opt for smaller varieties)
  • Floral tape
  • Ribbon (or a strip of leather)
  • Hot glue

Here's how to do it:

1. Start with a faux floral to form a sturdy base — keep the stem attached.

2. Attach real flowers around it, but remember to keep it petit — this needs to be worn on a lapel!

3. Use floral tape to hold the blooms together.

4. Wrap a piece of ribbon around the base to hide the floral tape. Glue at the back of the corsage to keep it hidden.
