Catching up with new mama Jessi Cruickshank and squealing over her cute bundles of joy!
“My new aesthetic is ‘milk/poop/puke’ friendly-fashion. It’s very glamorous.”
After nine months full of epic announcements, endless #twinspiration and real talk on everything from placenta-eating to the perils of maternity fashion, we couldn't be more excited for our own Jessi Cruickshank to bring her twin boys into the world.
And come they did, arriving healthy, happy and totally identical — with full heads of hair to boot!
If there's one thing for sure, it's that Diego Green Gatica and Rio Ross Gatica are going to be upping the adorable quotient on our Instagram feeds (while simultaneously melting our hearts) for months and years to come.
Now that the family is settling in at home, we caught up with the new mom to get the latest on her little bundles of joy, the truth about what went down in the delivery room and much, much more.
Mazel tov! What are the little guys like?
Thank You! They are identical twin boys but they really are starting to reveal their own distinct personalities. The 'older brother' (four minutes older) is calm and easy-going and will let you shape his butter-soft body into any position you please. He's the type to yawn at a loud noise.
Our little guy is always on high alert. Even in the womb, he was the one constantly kicking and moving and shaking. He always wants to know 'Who are you? What are we doing? Who exactly is in charge here?' As long as you speak to him he'll keep his eyes flickering in your direction. Even at 3 days old, he had FOMO — he never wants to miss a thing.
Did you wear false eyelashes and extensions in the delivery room?
Ha. NO! I know myself well enough to know that I would be crying and sweating and crying some more, so any kind of false appendage would inevitably end up glued to my forehead. I think I was wearing a little mascara when I went into labour because inevitably it ended up all over my face.
Your husband — which side of the delivery was he on?
It all happened so quickly — it took me less that 30 minutes to push BOTH babies out — so he didn't really have time to gather himself and stay on any particular "side". He was with me, helping me push, then holding the first baby, while I pushed out the second, then cutting the cords… he saw everything and was just as loving, supportive and involved throughout the birth as he has been through the entire pregnancy.
You've been giving it to us straight this whole time, what was the worst thing about labour? What was the best thing about labour?
The aftermath was far worse than the actual thing. NOBODY PREPARES YOU FOR THAT. I got through this incredibly exhausting, painful, emotionally and physically draining experience of birthing two babies and I thought it was over — I thought I would get to meet my babies and live happily ever after. This was not the case — I was a mess for at least 3 days after giving birth. Just exhausted and in pain and a total hormonal mess. I believe, at one point, I cried tears of joy at the sight of some tropical Jell-O.
Spencer and Heidi have already locked down the social media accounts for soon-to-be-born Speidi baby… what other delivery advice do you have for your old pals?
Wow. I have actually reached out to congratulate them and they have done the same to me, so Speidi and I are on good terms, I won't judge. I will say, if they can handle all the scrutiny they have faced over the years, from tabloids and blogs and a little television show called The After Show, they can handle anything. Heidi is tough, she'll push that baby out like a champ. And I wouldn't be surprised if they had a paparazzi shoot arranged in the delivery room.
When do the twins get social media accounts? Shared or separate?
Oh god, no. They will not be getting their own social media accounts, not that I don't appreciate a good baby (and especially TWIN) Insta account, but that seems like a full time job. For now, I'll post a few pics of them on my account and protect them from the wild world of social media until they are at least 25. That's doable, right?
What's your latest vibe on Twinspiration for the boys, have we developed a look?
Our current look is 'anything that fits'. Two babies at once is no joke, yesterday we went through 8 onesies so… the 'look' has become less of a priority. Right now, I'm just focused on the 'whatever the hell is clean'.
Maternity fashion was a rude awakening, so what's the real deal on being new parents?
I put on a nice white shirt the other day and it lasted 45 minutes before getting covered in vomit. My new aesthetic is 'milk/poop/puke' friendly-fashion. It's very glamorous.
What's the greatest thing about being a mom so far?
It really is euphoric. I look at these perfect little babies and I can't believe that they are mine. I have never felt love like this for anything or anyone. All the swelling and bloating and maternity jeans were worth it. 100%.
