First Play Live: Riit, ataataga
The artist from Nunavut performs her debut full-length album.
Riit's debut full-length album, ataataga, came out Oct. 25, and the Inuk singer from Panniqtuuq, Nunavut, is catching a lot of attention for her emotive songs featuring beautiful melodies and throat singing.
The intense subject matter of her songs, ranging from sexual abuse to intergenerational trauma is accentuated by the clarity of her voice and intimacy of delivery. The title of Riit's song "#uvangattau" is the Inuktitut translation of #MeToo. The whole studio album is sung in Inuktitut, except for a verse in English from Zaki Ibrahim on #uvangattau. Riit wants her music to be heard and understood by Inuit in their own language.
Riit's album was produced by Graham Walsh of Holy F--k, who adds his prodigious talents to the project. For her CBC Music performance, Riit brought two friends with her: throat singer Alexia Galloway-Alainga and DJ/producer Edna Snyder. Watch them debut five songs below:
