      Vien Huynh-Lee

      Freelance contributor

Vien Huynh-Lee lives in Ottawa with her husband, Garvin, and their two children, Samuel and Louisa. She is a proud Canadian and her heart will always be in the Prairies where she grew up. Huynh-Lee remains thankful to the community of Birtle, Man., for answering the call to welcome refugee families like hers to Canada.

Vien Huynh-Lee’s family came to Canada as refugees from Vietnam and moved to Manitoba. Despite the challenges of living in a place so different from Vietnam, they found a home in this rural community.

We left Vietnam with 6 spoons. The one that remains serves much more than its purpose

Vien Huynh-Lee’s family left Vietnam in 1979 with just a bag of clothes for each person and a set of stainless steel spoons. The spoon eventually came to symbolize the family’s resiliency and life in Canada.
