2 targeted shootings in Surrey caused school closure
Investigations into two overnight shootings in Surrey temporarily closed J. T. Brown Elementary
An investigation into two targeted shootings in Surrey caused the temporary closure of J. T. Brown Elementary School Tuesday morning.
Surrey RCMP said officers received a report of shots fired involving two vehicles near 125th Street and 80th Avenue around midnight.
When police arrived the vehicles were gone, but bullet casings were found on the scene.
Minutes later, Surrey RCMP were called to the 13200 block of 67B Avenue after a drive-by shooting, where it appeared a parked vehicle was the target.
No injuries were reported at either scene.
The investigation led police to a residence in the 12500 block of 58B Avenue, in the vicinity of J.T. Brown Elementary School.
The school was closed as a precaution, and is scheduled to re-open at 12:25.
In a release, Surrey RCMP said the two shootings are believed to be linked, and that the parties involved are likely known to each other.
No one is in custody and no charges have been laid.
Resham Sandhu, who lives in the area, said he was woken up at 6 a.m. by police sirens.
"Usually you see two or three police cars if they want to arrest somebody, but there were at least 20 of them and they had a big, bulletproof car," he said.
"It's kind of sad. I don't know why it's happening in this neighbourhood," he said.
