Five people were taken to hospital after overdosing at a Coquitlam house late last night, according to the B.C. Ambulance Service.

Six ambulances were originally called to the two-level home on MacIntosh Street after 10 p.m. PT Sunday night.

Paramedics were on scene for "some time" stabilizing patients, said the BCAS.

Five people were eventually taken to hospital in stable condition, according to the ambulance service.

It was not immediately clear what substance the people had ingested, or if they were still in hospital Monday morning.

In April, B.C.'s provincial health officer declared a public health emergency after a "significant" increase in drug-related overdose deaths in the province.
