Age of Anxiety: CBC Vancouver event takes honest look at youth fears
Oct. 3 event will feature three young adults and medical experts sharing their experiences with anxiety
Panic attacks.
The fear that the pain in your side may be cancer.
The feeling that no matter what you do, or no matter how hard you try, you will not be good enough.
All of these are forms and feelings of anxiety, and ones that can affect youth as well.
On Oct. 3, a panel of people who have experienced these thoughts first-hand will share their stories as part of Age of Anxiety, an event focusing on the issue of youth anxiety, moderated by CBC's Gloria Macarenko.
It's the second event in CBC Vancouver's Inspiration Series, which is a collection of intimate and targeted discussions celebrating the people that inspire new ideas in the Vancouver community.
- Saturday October 3rd
- 1:00 p.m. PT – 4:00 p.m. PT
- CBC Vancouver's Studio 40 (700 Hamilton Street)
For those who can't attend, a livestream of the event will be on the CBC website starting at 1:30 p.m. PT
Jared Casey, a former NCAA basketball player from Maple Ridge, will share his struggles with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder.
Eighteen-year-old singer-songwriter Ria Jade will talk about her generalized anxiety, and Heinrich Schoeman will talk about how he has learned to manage the fears that arise in his mind when he becomes anxious about his health.
These panelists will also be joined by experts in the field of anxiety:
- Dr. Keyvan Hadad - Pediatrician, BC Women's Hospital, UBC
- Dr. Kristin Buhr - Psychologist, North Shore Stress & Anxiety Clinic, AnxietyBC
- Kerry Dennehy - Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation
- Dr. Deborah MacNamara - Clinical counsellor, Neufeld Institute
Participants will also have the chance to learn more from organizations in Metro Vancouver that have a focus on youth mental health, at the resource hub outside Studio 40, before and after the panel discussion.
