It could be weeks or even months before authorities unravel all the details of a deadly weekend boating tragedy on Shuswap Lake in B.C.'s southern Interior, RCMP say.

A speedboat slammed into a houseboat late Saturday night, embedding itself in the interior of the larger craft and killing the houseboat's captain, 53-year-old Ken Brown of Anglemont, B.C.

There will be a detailed inspection of both vessels as investigators try to determine what led to the crash, Cpl. Annie Linteau said Monday.

"We have investigators from West Coast Marine and two investigators from Transport Canada whose expertise is to deal with collisions that happen on the water," Linteau said.

Linteau said police haven't yet determined if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

"There are a number of speculations out there, theories that are being put forward, and really it's too soon to confirm any of them," she said.

Linteau said two of the eight people injured in the crash remain in hospital.
