The vehicle emissions test applies to drivers in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley and the contract for the service runs out in two years.
BCAA spokesperson Trace Acres says that newer cars don't need the test. He says many of the association's members are upset that they still have to pay for it.

"Is the benefit worth the cost to motorists in terms of the $24 or $47 that they have to shell out? Is it worth the time? Is it worth the administration? Is it worth the cost of the facilities themselves and the cost of operating it?"
Acres suggests that a random testing program may work just as well.
But UBC professor of atmospheric science Douw Steyn disagrees. He says the current test is the only way to determine exactly what pollutants come from cars in the region.
