Bursary honours slain Surrey teen Maple Batalia

The family of slain Surrey, B.C., teen Maple Batalia is establishing a bursary in her memory.

Batalia, an aspiring actress, was gunned down in the parking lot of Simon Fraser University's Surrey campus in September.

Roseleen Batalia says her sister was an active volunteer at school and in her community. She says the family wants to make the bursary available to other young women like Maple.

"I feel that her seeing we're giving back in her honour, she would feel happy that someone else gets to pursue the dream she had and it will happen," Roseleen Batalia said.

The family has donated $10,000 to the health sciences department at SFU, where Maple Batalia was studying to become a dermatologist.

The family is also asking the community to get involved and help, much like Maple did.

"Another woman being able to pursue similar dreams like my sister will help bring me peace," Roseleen Batalia said. "I was my sister's biggest fan and seeing someone else's dream come true will give me a little peace."

There have been no arrests in connection with Batalia's death.

Shortly after the shooting, police released university surveillance video of a late-model white Dodge Charger leaving the area at high speed shortly after Batalia was killed.
