Canadian Cancer Society robbed in Mission, B.C.

The Canadian Cancer Society in Mission, B.C. has received thousands of dollars in donations after becoming the latest victim in a rash of burglaries at several non-profits over the last few months. 

The society's regional director Allan Mugford said thieves broke through the wall of its office on Jan. 16.

"They busted through the wall," said Mugford. "The dishes were all over the floor. Then they busted into the cabinets." 

The culprits caused $500 of damage and stole $3,000 in goods and cash, intended to help send sick kids to summer camp and fund pediatric research.

"It was pretty devastating. We don't anticipate that folks would target charities like ourselves that are working with the community to fight a cause like cancer."

Beverly Dixon, a volunteer with the society was heartbroken by the thefts.

"Absolutely shocked and very sad, really sad, to think that somebody had come in and stolen the funds that were going to be used for the children," said Dixon. "It was really hard not to just break down at that point."

But since news of the robbery broke, the community has rallied round to help the society. Donations have poured in, totalling $2,500, and Coast Capital has offered a further $3,500.

"It's been amazing. [We're] so appreciative for people to do outreach and come to the forefront, even just the sympathy and support they've shown," said Mugford.

The Canadian Cancer Society says it's extremely grateful for all of the donations — which also include a new safe and alarm system.
