Coquihalla bus crash: 2 remain in hospital
Crash that sheared front off tour bus sent 38 people to hospital Saturday
Two people remain in hospital after a horrendous crash on the Coquihalla Highway on Saturday.
The tour bus slammed into a broken-down car and a tow truck on the B.C. highway.
Police say one man, believed to be with the tour company, was thrown from the bus and landed in water below the highway. Nearly 40 people were treated for injuries from the crash, which sheared off the front-end of the bus.
Universal Coach Line, the company that operated the tour bus, would not talk to CBC but staff said the company's president is in Kamloops dealing with the aftermath of the crash. The bus company was chartered by PCC USA Vacation, which is based in California and caters to Asian travellers.
RCMP say the smashed bus is now being mechanically-inspected, but a crash like this is a slow process. Police do expect charges to be laid, but they're not sure what charges or when.
The owner of the tow truck company involved in the crash also declined to comment, saying the investigation is in the hands of the RCMP.
Meanwhile Transportation Minister Todd Stone has said the province will be conducting a safety audit of Universal Coach Line.
"I understand that the road was bare and dry and the incident happened on a straight section of highway," he said on Sunday.
"Coming out of the crash, there will be a safety audit of Universal Coach Lines bus lines. This will include a review of the company's overall safety record, both with respect to the mechanical operation of their buses as well as the safety and compliance record of their drivers."
