Coquitlam RCMP officers are seeking witnesses in a hit and run that claimed the life of a 51-year-old man Thursday evening.

The collision occurred just before 8 p.m. PT in the 800 block of Austin Avenue in Coquitlam.

"The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian did not stop at the scene," said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

"It is a legal obligation for all of us to stop for every collision — but in this case it isn't clear if the driver knew exactly what happened."

In a written statement, RCMP are appealing directly to the driver involved to come forward.

"Collisions at night can be very confusing...right now we only have the perspective of witnesses. Until we hear from you — the driver — we won't know your side and thus we won't have the complete picture of what happened."

Anyone with information is asked to call Coquitlam RCMP.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
