Cougars and bears caught on video stalking Port Moody, B.C. fish hatchery

Surveillance video captured by a salmon hatchery in Port Moody, B.C., shows a trio of cougars wandering around several entrances, even stopping to rest in front of a door of the building, before heading back into the woods. 

The video was posted to YouTube Wednesday by Mossom Creek Hatchery.

"We're delighted to see it, to see animals behaving naturally, relaxing," said Ruth Foster, co-founder of the hatchery. "We suspect that was a mother with her juveniles about a year or two old."

Another video showing a bear and her two cubs walking[ through the driveway of the hatchery was also posted the same day. 

"It's the first time any of us has seen bears in the vicinity this year," said Foster. 

The salmon hatchery is about one kilometre into the forest — away from any homes.

"We are in their habitat - this is their watershed."

Foster said the animals were all captured on camera early in the morning.

She suspects the animals have always been there — only now the hatchery has cameras to capture their every move.

Another video posted last week by the hatchery shows a deer being chased by two dogs. 

Port Moody Police told CBC News cougar and bear sightings are on the rise in the area. 

They said residents should always be aware and take precautions, especially this time of year when the weather warms up. 

If you're going out for a hike, officers suggest taking bear bells, keeping your dog on a leash and being aware of where your kids are playing.
