Delta port expansion plans opposed
A new community group, with members from three South Delta churches are organizing to oppose Port Metro Vancouver expansion plans for the Roberts Bank terminal.
Citizens Against Port Expansion were scheduled to meet Saturday afternoon in Ladner to discuss the port's plans for intermodal rail yards, a giant warehouse distribution centre and an expansion of the Deltaport itself.
Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington says the members are worried the expansion plans will impact the farmland and natural ecosystems in the region.
"The watering down of the environmental assessment process, the consultation process that is a manipulative coverup of their intentions — it's a desire to use fine, fine land for industrial purposes," Huntington said.
Port Metro Vancouver says it has already consulted and considered peoples' opinions and is now working on a plan to identify land it will need in the future.
