Animal cruelty officers in Dawson Creek, B.C., are probing the mysterious case of a dead dog encased in a block of ice.

A resident made the bizarre discovery on his front lawn on Jan. 15.

"Inside the block of ice, which looks to have been made from a larger rubber bin, was the frozen corpse of a medium-sized black dog," said Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the B.C. SPCA.

Moriarty said the individual who reported the incident does not know the dog or why anyone would leave the ice block containing its corpse on his property.

Investigators are trying to determine who owned the dog and how it died.

The B.C. SPCA conducts nearly 6,000 cruelty investigations a year.

Dawson Creek is about 750 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.
