Forest fire west of Lillooet, B.C., now fully contained

A forest fire that covered 80 square kilometres in B.C.'s Cariboo Region has been fully contained.

A forest fire that covered 80 square kilometres in B.C.'s Cariboo Region has been fully contained.

The Tyaughton Lake fire, believed to be caused by a person, had been burning since May 29.

Hundreds of firefighters spent weeks battling the blaze west of Lillooet, B.C., putting up guards to stop the fire from spreading and working to keep the flames from reaching nearby homes.

Fire Information Officer Jeanne Rucker said Saturday that crews were in the mop-up stage.

Nathalie Klein of the Squamish Lillooet Regional District said Carol Lake residents who had been forced to leave their homes could return.

  • The evacuation order for Carol Lake has been downgraded to an evacuation alert.
  • Evacuation orders remain in effect for Marshall Lake and Liza Lake.
  • Evacuation alerts also remain in place for Gun Lake, Gold Bridge, Bralorne, Tyaughton Lake, Gun Creek Road and Mud Creek.
