A known gang member was left high and dry Sunday, after being caught speeding through Abbotsford, B.C. — as he raced to get to Vancouver airport.

Abbotsford Police first spotted the man's rental BMW racing southbound at 134 km/h in a 70 km/h zone along Sumas Way near Old Yale Road at about 10:50 a.m. PT.

The 32-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was visiting from outside B.C. When police pulled him over, said Const. Ian MacDonald, he claimed he was late for a flight at YVR.

Police handed him a $483 ticket — and impounded the car.

"Unfortunately maybe the lesson here is if you want to become excessively late, then certainly you might want to engage in some speeding," said MacDonald.

"I'm not sure if he made his flight or not, but his vehicle, or in this case the rental vehicle, was impounded and he'll be about $500 lighter when he leaves."

The incident first came to light after Abbotsford Police Const. Paul Walker posted a photo to his Twitter account, showing the impounded car and a description of the driver's plight.
