Fatal vehicle crash closes Lougheed Highway eastbound in Maple Ridge

Police say one person is dead in an early morning crash along Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. The thoroughfare is expected to remain largely closed from 240th Street to Jim Robson Way Friday morning.

A stretch of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, B.C., is largely closed Friday morning following a fatal crash.

All eastbound lanes and one westbound lane on the thoroughfare are closed from 240th Street to Jim Robson Way, and 240th Street is fully closed from River Road to Hill Avenue. 

Ridge Meadows RCMP said they were called to the intersection of 240th Street and Lougheed Highway just after 3 a.m. Friday. They said one person died in the crash, which they believe involved only one vehicle. 

Photos taken of the scene show a car with its back end in the air and all but the rear of it severely damaged.

RCMP said the road is expected to remain closed for "several hours" Friday morning. 

"The Ridge Meadows RCMP is requesting patience this morning; and asking for commuters to plan an alternative route," they said.

The detachment is investigating the crash with the assistance of the Serious Crimes Unit and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team.
