A 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Haida Gwaii in northern British Columbia early Sunday morning.

Earthquakes Canada says the quake struck Sunday around 6:20 a.m. local time, just west of the archipelago.

It was recorded at a depth of 21 kilometres and was around 50 km southwest of Daajing Giids, according to Earthquakes Canada.

The agency's webpage says there are no reports of damage, and at a magnitude of 3.9, none would be expected.

B.C. faced a tsunami advisory earlier this week after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia on Tuesday sent waves roiling over the Pacific Ocean.

Massive earthquake near Russia triggers tsunami warnings

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake in eastern Russia caused widespread tsunami warnings as far away as Japan, Hawaii and the B.C. coast.

There was another magnitude 7.0 earthquake recorded late Saturday night in the same region, according to officials, but no tsunami threat was forecast for B.C.

The tsunami advisory last Tuesday was eventually cancelled, but B.C.'s emergency management minister says the incident was a reminder to always be prepared for a big quake closer to home.
