A Canada Post van has been impounded after the driver was caught doing 135 km/h in a 90-km/h zone through West Vancouver, police say.

A Canada Post van might have just been carrying "snail mail," but it was allegedly being driven at such a high speed through West Vancouver Monday that police impounded it.

The truck was doing 135 km/h in a 90-km/h zone on the Trans-Canada Highway, Cpl. Fred Harding said in a release Tuesday.

"The 1995 Chevrolet postal van has been impounded for seven days," Harding said.

Harding said the contents of the van were transferred to a second postal truck.

Police in B.C. can temporarily impound vehicles alleged to have been travelling at 40 km/h or more above posted speed limits.

A ticket for excessive speeding will cost a convicted driver at least $368 and as much as $483.
