The Trans-Canada Highway outside of Victoria was shut for hours after an accident this morning sent four people to hospital.

It has finally re-opened after closing just before 9 a.m. PT, but officials warn that there will be major delays due to congestion.

Paramedics say all four hurt were taken to Victoria General Hospital. Two are in critical condition, the other two are in stable condition.

The accident happened where Highway 1 intersects with Finlayson Arm Road in the popular Goldstream Provincial Park.

RCMP say the collision involved two passenger cars, a southbound Honda Accord and a northbound Volkswagen sedan with two occupants in each vehicle.

Investigators are examining the possibility that alcohol and driving pattern on the part of the driver of the southbound Honda may be factors in this crash. A criminal investigation is now underway.
