Maple Ridge cyclist killed in collision with suspected drunk driver

A woman is facing a possible charge of impaired driving causing death following a fatal collision with a cyclist on Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge, B.C., early Thursday morning.

RCMP say a patrol officer  spotted the woman's white Kia Sportage SUV allegedly travelling at high speed along Dewdney Truck Road near 244th Street just before 3 a.m. PT.

By the time the officer made a U-turn, the suspect vehicle had rolled over and burst into flames. The officer used his fire extinguisher to put out the flames, before firefighters arrived to help pull out the driver.

A police dog team then found an unidentified male cyclist that had been killed when he was struck by the SUV and knocked into the woods near the side of the road.

The woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say she could be charged with impaired driving causing death, but no charge has yet been laid.

Police say the area will be closed to traffic for several hours while they conduct their investigation.
