A 76-year-old man from New Westminster, B.C., with dementia who had been missing since Thursday was found dead near a SkyTrain station on Monday, say police.

Mathieu Racine's body was found near the 22nd Street SkyTrain Station on Monday afternoon.

"The cause of death at this point isn't suspicious and isn't related to any criminal activity," said New Westminster police spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Scott.

"Certainly with the weather over the weekend — it was cold, it was wet, it was rainy — that may have been a factor."

Scott said officers had been searching for Racine throughout the weekend, adding that the elderly man, who also had glaucoma, had wandered away from his home at least twice before.

The body was found in a fairly open area near the busy station.

The death necessitated that TransLink shut down the bus loop at the station so police could determine if it was a crime scene.

Buses were rerouted to Edmonds Station until the 22nd Street station was reopened shortly after 7 p.m. PT.
