Mill Bay Ferry Terminal closed after 90-year-old man drives off dock
Car crashed through a secure barrier and drove into the water, where it sank
RCMP divers spent Friday afternoon retrieving an SUV after a 90-year-old man drove off Victoria's Mill Bay Ferry Terminal just after 8 a.m. PT.
The vehicle crashed through a secure barrier at the top of the trestle, travelled down to the ferry dock and drove into the water where it sank, according to BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.
"Preliminary reports indicate just the one person inside the SUV and we're working to extract him right now," said RCMP Cpl. Janelle Shoihet.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not say why the elderly man drove into the water, but in an statement released later in the afternoon, RCMP said they are continuing to investigate.
The MV Klitsa had departed the terminal approximately five minutes earlier and was two kilometres into its sailing to Brentwood Bay.
Shawnigan Lake RCMP, Coast Guard Hovercraft, and an ambulance responded to the scene.
BC Ferries cancelled all Friday sailings between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay.
