North Vancouver Cpl. Michael Arbulic was fined $800 for speeding

A North Vancouver RCMP officer recognized for his work in cracking down on impaired drivers has been fined almost $800 for speeding.

Cpl. Michael Arbulic deliberately sped through a speed trap on the Upper Levels Highway last year on Valentine's Day, travelling more than 60 kilometres over the posted limit.

Arbulic apparently meant it as a prank against his traffic enforcement colleagues and wasn't ticketed, said North Vancouver RCMP Insp. Dave Attfield

But at least one member felt that was wrong and complained, prompting an internal investigation.

Arbulic didn't appear in court on Tuesday, but his lawyer told CBC's Richard Zussman that Arbulic has already paid a similar sum to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Attfield says Arbulic has not been disciplined internally, but he apologized and donated the equivalent of what would have been a speeding ticket to charity.

For the past two years, Arbulic has been honoured as a member of a team of officers who ticketed, suspended or otherwise got at least 12 impaired drivers off the road in a year.
