New Terry Fox Memorial rendering unveiled

The tile archway that was erected in the early 1980s is being replaced with a memorial that will include four bronze statues of the one-legged runner from Port Coquitlam, B.C.

The sculptures show Fox's signature hop-and-run style in stop-action steps.

A rendering of the sculpture — designed by author Douglas Coupland — was unveiled Tuesday by B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell and Fox's mother, Betty Fox.

"It's gorgeous," Fox said.

Inspired by online video

Coupland said he was inspired by online video he had seen of Fox's running method.

"If you go on YouTube, you can see lots of pictures of Terry's run," said Coupland. "We broke in down into four poses."

Fox, who lost his right leg to cancer at age 18, began his cross-country Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research near St. Johns in April 1980.

He had to end the run less than five months later, in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Fox had raised just over $1 million when he stopped, but runs held annually in his name have raised more than $500 million since then.

The new memorial will be in place when the stadium reopens in September.
