Nordstrom posts first of 1,000 new Vancouver jobs
Retailer hiring salespeople, bartenders, tailors, cooks, dishwashers, baristas and shoe shiner
U.S. retailer Nordstrom has started posting jobs for its new Vancouver location, with about 50 online Tuesday morning and an estimated 1,000 hires planned before the store opens in September.
The Vancouver store is the company's third in Canada, after Calgary and Ottawa, and will be located in the high-profile downtown corner previously occupied by Eatons and Sears.
Jobs posted for the new Vancouver location include retail salespeople, nail technicians, bartenders, baristas, tailors, stylists, cleaners and a shoe shiner.
The failure of another American retailer — Target — to succeed in its Canadian expansion has meant thousands of job losses in the retail sector.
The longevity of the Nordstrom's jobs will all depend on the success of the store, said a company representative.
"We hope to hire these 1,000 individuals and we hope that they'll be able to stick around," said John Bailey.
"We always look at the number of people in our store based on how our business is ... the biggest reward for us is when a customer returns back to our store."
