Only in Vancouver? Burrard Bridge to close for mass yoga class

In what may be the peak Vancouver moment, the city's Burrard Street Bridge will be closed on June 21 for some mass downward-dogging.

The province is hoping to host the largest International Day of Yoga event outside India on June 21

Vancouver will close down the Burrard Bridge on June 21 for a mass yoga class.

In a move that some are calling a peak Vancouver moment, B.C. Premier Christy Clark announced Friday that Vancouver's Burrard Street Bridge will be closed on June 21, the International Day of Yoga (IDY), for some mass downward-dogging.

"Only in Vancouver", social media users tweeted in unison as news spread of the seven-hour closure of one of the main connectors from downtown to the city's West Side.

The government has partnered with local yoga pant gurus Lululemon and yoga studio YYoga to organize what they hope will be the largest IDY event to be hosted outside India. Natural Gas company Altagas is also supporting, with a $10,000 sponsorship.

Though the bridge will be closed to vehicles from 4 a.m. until 11 a.m. PT, the big yoga stretch proper will begin at 8.30 a.m. and involve an hour-long yoga session.

June 21 is the date of this year's Summer Solstice, and is also Father's Day — so if Dad could do with a Sun Salutation to kick off his day, you know where to take him.
