Two people were injured, one critically, when a small plane crashed into the backyard of a home in a residential neighbourhood Monday north of Victoria, B.C.

First responders received reports of a small plane crash in the Hayden Place neighbourhood of Mill Bay around 1:25 p.m. The plane was coming from Sechelt on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast and heading for Victoria. Mill Bay is about 30 kilometres north of Victoria.

B.C. Emergency Health Services dispatched six ground ambulances and two air ambulances, according to a spokesperson.

One of the two people injured was airlifted to hospital and is in critical condition.

The other person was transported to hospital in a ground ambulance and is in stable condition. The pair were the only two people aboard the plane, according to the Transportation Safety Board (TSB).

Mill Bay fire chief Ron Beck said the four-seater plane nosedived into the backyard. Residents were home at the time but none of them were injured.

"It was very lucky," he said. "The family was home at the time ... they said the ground shook and then they looked outside and saw a plane."

The Transportation Safety Board says it's monitoring the situation. (CHEK News)

The TSB confirms the plane was a privately registered Beech G36 Bonanza. The board says it is not deploying investigators to the site but is monitoring developments.
