Police have arrested a man suspected of shooting a police officer after a tense standoff in the remote community of Argenta in the Kootenays.

The man holed up in a cabin on a remote property Thursday night after police arrived to execute an arrest warrant. It's unclear when the officer was shot.

The officer is in serious condition at Trail Hospital but is expected to survive.

The suspect faces a number of charges and is known to police.

Crisis negotiators were deployed to the scene and police had asked the public to refrain from broadcasting any of their movements.

Argenta has a population of approximately 100 and is located on the shore of Kootenay Lake.
