Raging Lillooet, B.C., wildfire continues to grow
Officials said Sunday the wildfire burning in B.C.'s Cariboo region continued to grow and was estimated to cover 40 square kilometres.
Extreme fire behaviour and strong winds from the west and northeast Saturday contributed to the spread of the fire near Tyaughton Lake, west of Lillooet, B.C.
An evacuation order was issued Sunday for Marshall Lake, Liza Lake and Carol Lake, and remained in effect for Mud Creek, Tyaughton Lake and Gun Creek Road.
An evacuation alert remained in place for Gun Lake, Gold Bridge and Bralorne.
More than 200 firefighters, 11 helicopters and 46 pieces of heavy equipment were on site battling the blaze. Structural protection units were also brought in to help save homes near the wildfire.
The fire was 15 per cent contained as of Sunday afternoon.
Crews make some progress on blaze in northern B.C.
Meanwhile, 92 firefighters continued Sunday to work to contain another fire burning near the B.C.-Yukon border.
Officials said the Smith River fire, estimated to cover 134 square kilometres, was 15 per cent contained.
An evacuation alert for the communities of Fireside, Coal River and Muddy River Indian Reserve No. 1 remained in place.
