Saanich police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with an alleged sexual assault that happened on March 17.

Jesse Doig, a daycare worker, has been charged with sexual assault, breaking and entering, and forcible confinement.

Police say a 22-year-old woman was attacked shortly before 2 a.m. PT at a home in the 3900 block of Wolf Street, where she was staying with friends.

The suspect is alleged to have broken into the home brandishing a knife, and then sexually assaulted the victim.

Police said the victim did not know the suspect.

Police called the crime "very traumatic" and one that had "significantly impacted" the victim.

"We have remained in close communication with her and are ensuring that support services are available to her as our investigation moves forward as a result of this arrest," a statement read.

Doig is an employee at the Cridge Centre for the Family in Victoria, where he worked in the pre-school and after-school programs.

Shelley Morris, CEO of the organization, said her staff were "shattered" at the news of Doig's arrest, saying it was hard to reconcile the person they knew at work with the charges.

There is no evidence to suggest any of the children Doig worked with were at risk, Morris says, but the centre has reached out to parents and offered support and information.

"It isn't anything that happened at the Cridge or … associated with the Cridge, but nonetheless he worked here and they have very reasonable questions and concerns," Morris said.
