Sask. case linked to E. coli cheese recall in B.C.
A person in Saskatchewan has contracted E. coli from Gort's Gouda Cheese Farm
Health officials say a Saskatchewan resident is the 13th confirmed case of E. coli infection linked to products from Gort's Gouda farm in Salmon Arm, B.C.
Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Saqib Shahab is expected to brief the media on the case shortly.
So far eight cases in Alberta and four in B.C. have already been linked to the farm. In one case an elderly woman in B.C. died from the infection, officials confirmed yesterday.
Also earlier today a 15th product was added to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency recall of cheeses products from the farm in Salmon Arm.
The agency says Gort's Gouda Cheese Farm brand Mild Gouda, made with raw milk, may contain E. coli. Fourteen other cheese products from the farm were recalled earlier this week.
Cheese produced between late May and early September — and sold in B.C., Alberta and over the internet — is affected by the recall.
Meanwhile health officials continue to check the farm in hopes of determining where the contamination occurred.
Yesterday, CBC News learned one of the health inspectors sent to the farm is the daughter of the farm's original owners and a former manager at the farm.
